Sonya Delwaide

Associate Movement Director, The Tempest

Choreographic experience ranges from modern dance and ballet to theatre and American television. Her works can be seen in the repertoire of Oakland Ballet, Ottawa Ballet, Ballet Austin, l’Ecole Supérieure des Grands Ballets Canadiens, Hubbard Street, AXIS Dance Company and Compagnie de Danse l’Astragale (artistic director 1992 to 1999). 

Teaching: National Ballet of Canada, Grands Ballets Canadiens, Alvin Ailey Dance Company and various colleges and professional studios in the U.S., Canada, Venezuela, France, Switzerland, Australia and China. Currently associate professor of dance at Mills College (Oakland), where she served as chair of the department for five years. 

Awards: Grants from the Zellerbach Family Fund, the W. A. Gerbode Foundation, Canada Arts Council, Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, Ministère des Affaires Culturelles du Québec, Ontario Arts Council. Recipient of “Meet the Composer Grant,” two Isadora Duncan Awards and Sarlo Award for Excellence in Teaching, from Mills College. Winner, “2006 New American Choreographic Talent” (Ballet Austin), “2000 Hubbard Street National Choreographic Competition.”
