Performing in the 2014 Green Show Friday, August 8 and Sunday, August 10.
This is their first season in the OSF Green Show.
"HYPERBOLE: Bard" is an original, family-friendly performance that recreates a collection of William Shakespeare’s most famous scenes through clowning, masks, puppets, and original music.
Rogue Artists Ensemble was founded in 2001 by theater designers and artists studying at the University of California, Irvine. The Rogues soon discovered their own style by employing digital media, music, dance, puppetry, mask work, special effects, theatrical illusions and other underrepresented art forms, which they defined as Hyper-theater. We celebrated our Tenth Anniversary in 2011 and have created over a dozen original new works and collaborated with hundreds of artists and community members. To date, our work has been seen by over 100,000 people in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Seattle.
Rogue Artists Ensemble is a unique American theatre ensemble that is focused on design. Our original plays use an arsenal of international storytelling techniques which include puppets, masks, theatrical magic, projection, sophisticated technology, audio sampling, dance and more to create an unforgettable and totally different kind of experience for young and old alike. Our goal by using this varied approach is to attract a new generation of theatergoer who has come to expect more in this tech savvy world.
We have been producing critically and financially successful works in Los Angeles since 2005, with RAE producing top-notch theater in Los Angeles while growing its operating budget every year. Two of our most recent Rogue productions, Gogol Project and Mr. Punch, received incredible audience and critical response and both were selected as a Critic’s Choice by the Los Angeles Times. Our work, HYPERBOLE: origins, was nominated for four awards by LA Weekly; including Production of the Year. And our most recent show, D is for Dog was nominated for a LA Weekly award for Comedy Ensemble. Rogue Artists Ensemble’s continued success demonstrates an ability to follow through with a plan of great scope and complexity.
The Rogues have a strong commitment to community outreach and education led by our all-ages shows, The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone and Zen Shorts. These shows have toured throughout California at small community events and schools, in addition to playing larger venues such as The Geffen Playhouse, Segerstrom Performing Arts Center, Rio Hondo College and others. In 2011, we were invited to be in residency for three weeks at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. We have conducted several residencies at the University of California, Irvine with the students from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts and at Jordan High School in Long Beach. All this demonstrates our commitment to engaging communities and to inspiring the artist within untapped youth.
The Rogues believe their unique Hyper-theater makes the work engaging to young and new audiences. RAE delivers the same integrity and ingenuity through its touring program to help shape audiences and artists of the future.
The Rogue Artists Ensemble on Community: Rogue Artists Ensemble develops work in Los Angeles for both adult audiences as well as projects that are suitable for all ages. Audiences who attend a typical Rogue production are many times new to live theater. We are excited for having provided many new audiences an opportunity to experience theater, especially when our educational outreach programming is taken into account. Previous studies on the demographics of Rogue audiences have shown a fairly even split in age groups as well as great economic diversity. Looking forward we are excited to expand our touring programming building on recent performances in Atlanta at the Center for Puppetry Arts and Seattle at the Regional Puppetry Festival. We are committed to developing work in Los Angeles with the intent to tour nationally and internationally.
