Award-winning youth mariachi presents exciting tour of Mexico's folklore

Since 1998, Mariachi Mestizo has been a cultural staple of the San Joaquin Valley of California. It regularly showcases the Mexican heritage of the region through music performance in numerous public and private events. The ages of its members range from 9 to 18, and they live in the communities of Porterville, Terra Bella, Richgrove, and Wasco, all in the surrounding area of Delano, CA. For the last five years, this group has received top honors at the Battle of the Mariachis competition in San Juan Capistrano Mission. Last summer, they were featured as the opening number for the Mariachi USA concert at the Hollywood Bowl. They are currently working on their first album at Capitol Records with the support of Little Village Foundation.

Mariachi Mestizo on Community:
Mariachi Mestizo is a performing ensemble of The Mariachi Studio, a privately owned music academy. The Mariachi Studio is a community space in the heart of the small rural community of Delano, CA, where youth can explore the art of Mariachi music-making in a nurturing environment through vocal and instrumental performance. The studio’s primary goal is to provide youth with opportunities to experience the music, the history, and the culture of Mexico as a means to discover positive ways to use their energies and free time. These musical and cultural studies act as a powerful means to steer youth away from dangerous pastimes, such as gang membership and substance abuse, which are rampant in the area. Through the Mariachi Mestizo project, The Mariachi Studio aims to develop an appreciation for the multicultural heritage of the San Joaquin Valley of California and to preserve Mariachi music by promoting an awareness of its aesthetic values.
