#StopHateForProfit

August 4, 2020

In July 2020, OSF took a stand with the  NAACP, Color of Change, ADL and all those calling for Facebook to act against hate and disinformation being spread across its platforms, pausing all paid advertising on Facebook and Instagram throughout the month.

We — along with more than 100 nonprofits including racial justice, human rights, and labor groups; religious organizations; and countless individuals — proudly support the #StopHateForProfit message to Facebook’s leadership.

The #StopHateForProfit campaign rightfully forced an unprecedented public examination of Facebook’s deep harms to marginalized communities and the health of our democracy, announcing these concerns clearly and unequivocally through the collective actions of many, not just the SHFP coalition, to Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.

Like many nonprofits, OSF relies on paid promotion campaigns available through Facebook and Instagram to reach our community and supporters, especially during this time when our ability to gather is limited.

As a nonprofit competing against paid corporate advertisements for the attention of the public, OSF will at this time continue to serve its communities and fundraise through the use of Facebook platforms, including some paid programs, during these unprecedented times.

Although we believe the success of the #StopHateForProfit month-long campaign is unmistakable, there is still much work to be done to address overdue, necessary, and meaningful actions.

OSF stands by civil rights organizations, media responsibility groups, and Black leadership to ensure civil rights protections and expunge hate. We will continue to participate in future advertising pauses and new actions if Facebook continues to ignore the SHFP straightforward demands for change.
