Macbeth

By William Shakespeare Directed by José Luis Valenzuela
May 28 – October 11, 2019 Allen Elizabethan Theatre

Fair is foul, and foul is fair

Spurred by prophesy and consumed by ambition, Macbeth murders the Scottish king and claims the throne. Fueled by guilt and paranoia, the new king and his wife embark on an increasingly bloody campaign to hold onto power. José Luis Valenzuela (Destiny of Desire) directs “the Scottish play,” in which the impulse to destroy rather than change grips the Macbeths, wreaking havoc on their minds and on everyone in their way. Renowned for making the epic feel operatic, Valenzuela’s intriguing and ritualistic take on Shakespeare’s evocative tragedy plumbs the depths of human psychology and the pitfalls of unchecked ambition and violence.

This production of Macbeth is part of Shakespeare in American Communities, a national program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Development of Macbeth was supported by a grant from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation.

Length: Approximately 2 hours, 47 minutes, including one intermission

Suitability Suggestions

A compelling cautionary tale about the corrupting influence of power and fear of the other, Macbeth contains frightening imagery of witchcraft, the onstage murder of a mother and her children, suicide and a decapitation. The play is exciting and straightforward, telling a vivid story that is easy for student audiences to follow. It is most suitable for well-prepared, mature middle schoolers and up who are ready to handle the violence, sensuality and frightening imagery.

As a result of a generous $3 million grant from The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the Elizabethan Stage/Allen Pavilion has been renamed the Allen Elizabethan Theatre. The Foundation provided the lead gifts for the building of the Allen Pavilion in 1993, when the name of the theatre was changed to Elizabethan Stage/Allen Pavilion.

One of America's oldest Elizabethan theatres, OSF’s outdoor flagship stage is named for a queen and the glorious age in which Shakespeare wrote. Experience the sweep and majesty of those unforgettable stories of love, tragedy and spiritual transformation beneath a canopy of stars. This outdoor theatre, with orchestra and balcony seating, accommodates 1,190 patrons.

Macbeth will be performed at Mountain Avenue Theatre (201 S Mountain Ave.) July 31 - September 6.
In addition to evening performances, some matinees will also be offered during this time frame.
